The authors explain the historical context for continuing certification in surgery and the American Board of Medical Specialties’ Vision for the Future of Continuing Boad Certification, which calls for replacement of ineffective, traditional mechanisms for physicians’ maintenance of certification with meaningful strategies relevant to day-to-day practice. They propose that video-based assessment and video-based surgical coaching be implemented as a part of future continuing certification programs.
