Baseline qualitative study examining how surgeons without dedicated training in coaching principles naturalistically discuss operative performance. Analyzing transcripts of 20 surgeons operated together in pairs, results reveal that surgeons routinely discuss performance goals and ask questions collaboratively, but gaps were prominent in surgeons’ displays of constructive feedback and action planning / peer learning support.
