Summary

In the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, researchers aimed to evaluate self- vs peer-assessments of surgical skill. They compared self rated videos of a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy from 25 surgeons to peer-ratings of the same video. Authors conclude that surgeons who over-rate their skill had higher leak rates for complex procedures. Additionally, these video assessments can be useful for determining who may benefit from surgical coaching programs.
