Summary

Prospective evaluation during a video-based coaching initiative in the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative. Researchers aimed to describe the relationship between operative technical skill and patient outcomes. 17 surgeons submitted a video of laparoscopic right colectomy for peer rating; outcomes were compared for colectomy and for any operation in the statewide database. Results showed that higher technical skill ratings with colectomy were associated with lower complication rates for colectomy and for all other procedures performed by that surgeon.
