Summary

Drawing on 11 introductory, one hour meetings between eight coaches and eleven coachees, this qualitative study sought to identify strategies used by peer surgical coaches to develop effective peer-coaching relationships. Key areas of focus for peer surgical coaches: aligning role and process expectations about the coaching process (i.e. potential countercultural expectations), establishing rapport with the coachee, and cultivating mutual trust. Importantly, the authors differentiate coaching from counterproductive and hierarchical didactic approaches.
